Remember the handbook
May 3, 2005Recently read a sample of corporate blogging rules posted by Thomas Nelson Publishers CEO Michael Hyatt on his Working Smart weblog (updated version here). I think this is a good reference, given that companies are now encouraging employee blogging (as a P.R. move or to boost online presence),
but don’t exactly have clear-cut policies on employee blogging.
But I’d still hold on to the “common sense” principle I blogged about earlier.
After all, blogging policies are just extensions of existing company
policies until actually explicitly included in the existing rules and
regulations.
I think the second version
is pretty cool, being stripped of the formality and legalese (I think
people respond more positively to issuances that are more
conversational). A few major points:
- Write as yourself.
- Own your content.
- Write relevant. Write often.
- Be nice.
- Keep secrets.
- Respect copyrights.
- Obey the law.
- Remember the Handbook.
Oh yes, remember the handbook!
