Dear Editor
April 27, 2005Are blogs the new “Letter to the Editor?”
In the prehistoric years (pre-blogging, that is) it is not uncommon to
read letters to the editor written by affected persons to newspaper/magazine
editors, providing reactions to articles or op-ed
materials. An alternative
would be for the same person to publish a response in his/her own
article/column in either the same publication or another medium.
However, the popularity of blogging now brings about the dawn of a new
feedback mechanism for the published word. While papers and mags
still do publish a “Letters to the Editor” section, it would be very
easy to blog about a reaction to items published in traditional media
(whether on- or off-line). In fact, isn’t this precisely what
blogs are about? A Blog serves as its author’s medium for
publishing his thoughts and opinions, which may include reactions to
interesting articles in other forms of media, or articles that directly
affect him/her.
So my answer to my question in the first paragraph would be yes.
Blogs are, in my humbe opinion, “Letters to the Editor” on steroids.
